On an old blog I used to do a Navigating The Newport Folk Festival post where I would try to plan out my three days in advance. Each year that exercise has proven to be a waste of time. While it’s fine to have your list of “must see” artists to plan around, I find that you are doing yourself a disservice to try to eliminate the possibility of seeing anyone in advance. There have been times where I’ve been running from the Fort Stage to Quad Stage and been stopped in my tracks by what was happening on the Harbor Stage.
One of the reasons the Newport Folk Festival is important to me is that it has become a major source of my music discovery every year. This will be my 8th time going and throughout those years artists like Courtney Barnett, Shakey Graves, First Aid Kit, Houndmouth and Wild Child have been in heavy rotation since I first heard them because of Newport.
So this year, I want to thank the Newport Folk Festival for the following artists they introduced me to this year:
- Mt. Joy
- Chicano Batman
- Margaret Glaspy
The list does seem to be getting shorter and shorter each year due to how much of the Folk Family returns year after year. This festival is important to me, not because it’s the best three days of the year, but because it help shape what I’m going to listen to for that whole year.
Here is this year’s schedule:
